Youth Courses

Southampton Water Activities Centre is a Recognised Training Centre approved by:

The Royal Yachting Association.
The British Canoe Union.
The Adventure Activities Licensing Authority.

For all the following courses children should be between 8 and 16 years of age and be able to swim 50 metres. If children are unable to meet this swimming requirement due to disability please phone the centre to discuss any special needs.
Where appropriate children will be divided into different age groups according to the nature of the activity. In the event of adverse weather, the centre reserves the right to ffer alternative activities to those described. For example, in the event of gale force winds, sailing would be inappropriate and therefore a land based activity may be substituted.

Adventure Activities Licensing Authority

The centre is registered with the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority and is licenced to provide specified activities under the following headings:

Trekking
Climbing

Splash & Water Fun

Overview:
An fun packed time where you will get wet and have lots of fun learning to Sail, drive a Powerboat & build rafts. Safety and wet weather clothing and equipment supplied.

Taster Sailing (Mornings or Afternoons)

Course Overview:
If you have never been sailing before and want to have a go before committing yourself to a course then one of these group sessions may be just what you need to help make a decision. This session is also a great present for a friend or loved one! You will sail in one of our larger two person dinghies with an instructor on board and safety cover on the water. The sailing is part instruction and part demonstration. Young people aged from 8 year old are also welcome.

Two Day Courses

Start Sailing Stage 1

Course Overview:
A safe and fun filled introduction to sailing in Optimist dinghies. The course will follow the RYA stage one syllabus and will teach you how to rig, launch and sail your dinghy wherever you want to go.

Start Sailing Stage 2

Course Overview:
A follow on course from Stage 1 with the emphasis still on fun. Using games and structured sessions the instructors will guide and encourage you to practise skills and learn new techniques whilst building confidence and an awareness of safety.

Start Sailing Stage 3

Course Overview:
By the end of the Stage 3 course you will be safety conscious and be able to sail a dinghy confidently in light winds. Sailing predominantly in Optimists you will practise sailing backwards, forwards, upwind, downwind, tacking and gybing to your hearts delight and master of your own boat.

Course Overview:
This new RYA course is intended to bridge the gap between Stage 3 and the new Dinghy Sailing Modules which are now available to young people as well as adults. The course focuses more on two person boats with the skills of crewing and seamanship to the fore.

Four and five day Youth Sailing Courses

Youth Dinghy Week (Five Day)

Course Overview:
The aim of this course is to provide an thorough introduction to the sport of dinghy sailing in an intensive five day programme. By the end of the week individuals should have achieved Stage 1, 2, 3 or 4 depending on previous sailing experience and ability (each youth stage is the equivilent of a two day course). As with the weekend courses you practise all the basics ashore and afloat whilst havings lots of fun and games along the way.

Start Racing

Course Overview:
The aim of this five day course is to give a solid introduction to dinghy racing at club level. Children wishing to take part on this course should be a reasonably competent helm and have at least two seasons experience.

Spinnakers and Racing Skills

Course Overview:
This course aims to improve the techniques and knowledge of young club level sailors in preparation for open meetings and small regattas. The course will follow the RYA racing syllabus. Participants should have previously attended the RYA Start Racing course (or Red Badge) or have at least two full seasons club racing experience.

Seamanship and Day Sailing Week

Course Overview:
A course which builds on your basic skills and seamanship and develops both your boat handling and seamanhip skills and also prepares you for short expeditions. You should already be a reasonably competent helm and have at least two seasons sailing experience.
