RYA Powerboat Level 1

Pre-requisite: Must be 8 years old and over. Complete beginner

Course Length: 1 day Time: 9am to 4:30pm

This is a 1 day course introducing theory and practice of safe seamanship in a small powered craft.The course will cover launching and recovery, boat handling, safety equipment, pre-start checks and personal buoyancy as well as some essential theory. Restrictions apply to 8 to 16 year old certificate holders.

Course Length: Time: 9am to 4:30pm each day

This is a 2 day course giving a thorough introduction to small boat handling.This course will cover the basics of boat preparation and pre-start checks, launching and recovery, boat handling at low and high speeds and some basic navigation.There will be an opportunity to experience a variety of the Centre's powerboats. This course fulfills the minimum requirements for the marine coastguard agency (MCA) International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for boats 10m and is open to everyone over the age of 12 years. Restrictions apply. Under 16 years of age must be supervised by a competent adult.
This course is also a pre-requisite for the RYA Dinghy Instructor qualification

RYA Intermediate Powerboat

Pre-requisite: RYA Powerboat Level 2

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9am to 4:30pm each day

This course will give you the grounding to plan and execute a passage within coastal waters by day in a safe and seamanship manner. More time is dedicated to pilotage, naivgation (electronic and traditional), fuel and engine checks, the affect of waves and rougher conditions as well as power trims and trim tabs on boat handling in different conditions. This course is highly recommended for anyone considering taking the RYA Advanced Powerboat Course

RYA Safety Boat

The aim of this course is to introduce the techniques used in powerboats escorting fleets of dinghies, windsurfers and kayak/canoes, providing safety cover for training fleets and assisting in race management.

RYA Advanced Powerboat Driver

Pre-requisite: RYA Intermediate Powerboat (coastal)

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9am to 4:30pm plus and evening session on day 2

A course designed for more adventurous powerboat drivers. The course includes preparation for sea, boat handling, passage making and responsibility as a skipper, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, use of engines, emergency situation and night cruising. This is a pre-requisite for anyone looking to train as a powerboat instructor. Powerboat handling skills and knowledge are assessed to ensure a good competence before being allowed onto the RYA Powerboat Instructors Course. The course will consist of principles of practical instruction, lesson planning, teaching styles, use of questioning, preparation and use of visual aids, assessment of students' learning, explanation and presentation of theory subjects, the structure of the scheme, planning progressive teaching sessions, preparation of boats and equipment, teaching methods to Powerboat Level 2. The RYA/MCA exam is a practical test of skippering ability at both day and night in small craft (under 10m) boat/vessel. Sea Survival

DSC VHF Radio Communication Course

Pre-requisite: None

Course Length: 1 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

This course covers the use of VHF Radio, principles of operation and mayday distress operations. The course is suitable for people with no experience or for those who have completed a VHF prioor to the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). The GMDSS became fully operational in 1999. This added Digital Selective Calling (DSC) to the radio.


Active Sail Week

Pre-requisite: Beginner

Course Length: 5 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

For the more serious young sailor wanting to achieve RYA Youth Sailing Scheme awards Stages 1 to 4 will provide this (see below).
For a more easy going recreational fun week on the water Active Sail Week can provide supervised instruction and safety cover whilst the young sailor builds on confidence and ability, Pre-requisite is Stage 2.


RYA Start Sailing Stage 1

Pre-requisite: Beginner

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

A great introduction to Sailing which will teach how to rig, launch and sail in a safe and fun filled environment under the supervision of an experienced instructor. Courses will be run in laser picos which are specifically designed for the smaller sailor.

RYA Start Sailing Stage 2

Pre-requisite: RYA Start Sailing Stage 1

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

Stage 2 is a follow-on course from Stage 1 using games and structured session instructors will guide and encourage practice of skill and new techniques whilst building confidence and awareness of safety. Sailor will learn, rig and launch without assistance and sail independently


This course is part of the Active Sailing Week


RYA Start Sailing Stage 3

Pre-requisite: RYA Start Sailing Stage 2

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

This course includes an introduction to sailing downwind and gybing skills, rigging, launching and recovery, enhanced sailing techniques and sailing theory. Stage 3 is equal to Adult level 2.


This course is part of the Active Sailing Week


RYA Start Sailing Stage 4

Pre-requisite: RYA Start Sailing
Stage 3

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

By the end of this course the young sailor will be able to rig, launch and sail in more challenging conditions. The course also includes man overboard recovery, sailing backwards, returning to beach, jetty and mooring safely in any wind direction. Skills learned on a single handed dinghy will now be transferred to a larger double handed dinghy and preparation made for the Advanced Sailing Modules


This course is part of the Active Sailing Week


The next progression once Stage 4 is completed is to move onto the RYA Advanced Sailing Modules of the National Sailing Scheme: Seamanship Skills, Day Sailing, Sailing with Spinnakers,Performance Sailing and Start Racing. (See course descriptions below)


RYA Level 1

Pre-requisite: Beginner

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

The aim of this course is to offer an enjoyable introduction to dinghy sailing where safety, fun and expert tuition are the key elements.


RYA Level 2

Pre-requisite: Improver

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

This course is designed as a follow-on course for those who have recently completed a Level 1 course and will progress your sailing skills to achieve the Level 2 Award. This course would also be suitable for those whose sailing may be a 'little rusty' and need a refresher. An intensive skills weekend.


RYA Level 1 and 2 combine (Single Handed)

Pre-requisite: Beginner

Course Length: 5 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

This is a 5 day course based on the RYA Level 1 and 2 syllabus. Using the Centre's, Lasers' and Pico dinghies, experience the sense of achievement in mastering the skills needed to ultimately sail without your instructor onboard.


RYA Level 1 and 2 combine (Double Handed)

Pre-requisite: Beginner

Course Length: 5 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

This is a 5 day course based on the RYA Level 1 and 2 syllabus. Using the Centre's Wayfarers, Laser Stratos’ and vision, experience the sense of achievement in mastering the skills needed to ultimately sail without your instructor onboard.


RYA Introduction to Day Sailing (Improver Module)

Pre-requisite: RYA level 2 and Better Sailing Level 3

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

On completion of this coure, the succusseful sailor will have a confident , safe approach to planing and executing a short cruise in a Dinghy/Keelboat/Multihull. Content will include preparation of boat, passage planning for desired cruise and execution of plan.


Sailing with Spinnakers (Improver Module)

Pre-requisite: RYA level 2 and Better Sailing Level 3

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

On completion of this course the successful sailor will understand how to sail ad Dinghy/Keelboat/Mutlihull rigged with an asymmetric or symmetric spinnaker. Content will include rigging, hoisting, velocity made good, gybing, drop, apparent wind, hull shape and rig set up.


Performance Sailing (Improver Module)

Pre-requisite: RYA level 2 and Better Sailing Level 3

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

On completion of this course the successful sailor will understand how to sail performance Dinghy/Keelboat/Mutlihull in all wind conditions that they can be expected to encounter and sailing the craft to the best advantage at all times. Emphasis will be in coaching the candidates sailing performance . The course will be aimed at two person spinnaker boats however it can be delivered in performance single hander's with relevant certificate endorsed.


Seamanship Skills (Improver Module)

Pre-requisite: RYA level 2 and Better Sailing Level 3

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

On completion of this course the successful sailor will be capable of manoeuvring a Dinghy/Keelboat/Multihull in a seaman like manor and make seamanship decisions in moderate conditions. Course will include sailing backwards, without a Rudder/Centreboard. MOB, Reefing afloat, returning to a beach or jetty in a range of conditions.


Start Racing (Improver Module)

Pre-requisite: RYA level 2 and Better Sailing Level 3

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

This course is designed to give the confidence, skills and knowledge to take part in club racing in good conditions increasing confidence and improving skills.


RYA Dinghy Instructor Pre-entry Training and Assessment

Pre-requisite: Advanced sailing knowledge and ability

Course Length: 2 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

This two day course will help to prepare knowledge and skills required to successfully complete the Pre-assessment exam during the second day. During the assessment you will be tested on your general sailing ability, sailing backwards, sailing without a rudder and sailing in tight circles (as per the RYA G14 publication).
A one day assessment can be arranged on request.


RYA Dinghy Instructor

Successful completion of the pre-entry assessment

Course Length: 4 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

A five day training course and assessment for the RYA Dinghy Instructor qualification. This course will train experienced dinghy sailors to instruct within the Young Sailors’ Scheme and the National Dinghy Scheme. the course is run and assessed by highly trained RYA Coaches. As part of the course you will be given a topic to present to the Coach

Course Length: 4 day Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

In this advanced course a strong emphsis is put onto the management of groups afloat and the role the senior instructor plays in the development of other instructors within the same centre/club. This is a four day course with an optional refresher day for you to familiarise yourself with SWAC's facilities and operating procedures.
