Sailability

‘Imagine the thrill of sailing for people who can feel and hear but have no sight, or of sailing a boat at speed even though they can't walk, or of joining in a sport where deafness doesn't matter’ (RYA Website).

Over the past few years SWAC has been working in partnership with the Royal Yachting Association, The Flagstaff Trust, Aiming High and the Hamble Valley Rotary Club to develop our Sailability scheme to get more people on the water from within Southampton and the local area.

Our scheme is fronted by inspirational quadriplegic sailor Geoff Holt, the first disabled sailor to sail around Britain single handed.

Our aim is to encourage people with learning and/or physical disabilities to come and have a go at sailing. Our purpose built facility has easy access to downstairs classrooms and facilities, with disabled changing rooms and a stable pontoon with hoist for easy access to the water. We believe with the equipment we posses and the enthusiasm and expertise of our staff and volunteers it is possible to get everyone on the water and let them experience the thrill and independence of sailing in a safe and fun environment. Our fleet comprises of a Paralympic class 23 ft Sonar keelboat, a fleet of Access dinghies and many other boats to cater for the needs of the individual.

We run regular evening sessions during the summer season but can also run bespoke sessions to fit in with your requirements. Do not hesitate to ring or email us and speak to our friendly staff about arranging a visit to see how we can help you get on the water.
